The Berkshire Wind Power Project is owned and operated by the Berkshire Wind Power Cooperative Corporation, a non-profit entity created by 14 Massachusetts municipal utilities and the Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electric Company (MMWEC). After ten-plus years of planning and development, the vision of the Berkshires as a leader in clean, green, and renewable energy is coming to fruition with the Berkshire Wind Power Project leading the way.
Unlike other utilities, municipal utilities are not required to purchase renewable energy. Nonetheless, because their customers support renewable energy development, these public entities took the initiative to form the Cooperative and complete the Berkshire Wind Power Project. In doing so, they have made a vital commitment to developing the Commonwealth’s next generation of energy resources.
